Strike at Trivandrum medical college – disease without a cure

From yesterday, contract security guards at Trivandrum medical college went on a lightning strike. They also created law and order problems in and around medical college. They are demanding the withdrawal of suspension of some of their colleagues.

Now you may be wondering why I am writing about such a common event (strikes) in Kerala. Well, this incident illustrates the extend of rot that has entered the government departments and institutions. The widespread indiscipline and lack of respect for authority has created a vicious environment in almost all government institutions. It is only made worse by the idiotic politicians. Even the “idiots” in Kerala are so ashamed of politicians that they are angry at comparing them with politicians.

Let me give a background of the strike that is going on at Trivandrum Medical College. Being a government institution, this medical college is notorious for corruption. It is rumored that even hospital beds collect bribe from patients. Another problem has been the lawlessness due to lack of crowd control at the hospital. Criminals used to roam in the hospital compound with impunity and at one stage even the doctors started getting abused. So a security group was created in Medical college to control the crowd and also to ensure some discipline among the visitors there.

Over a period of time this security group has grown to about 60 guards hired on contract basis. They were controlled by “sergeants” who are permanent government employees.  Now after a while these “security guards” themselves started acting like criminals mistreating the visitors at the Medical college. So the end result was like giving your house’s key to a thief.

Soon the security guards realized that they can do any  nonsense and get away with it. After all, they have enough strength to be start a “trade union militant” outfit.  So after a while indiscipline crept in and they refused to listen to their bosses (Sergeants). Soon many of the guards started taking unauthorized leaves and appeared only to collect their contract wage!

Can you imagine the scenario? You hire someone on daily wage and he comes to you after 30 days without doing any work and starts collecting his wage for the last 30 days! How funny is that?

So finally the administration at Medical College had enough and they suspended two of the worst offenders who are accused of indiscipline and abuse of their superiors. Now the entire contract hired security guards in Medical College went on strike. to me, There is only logical solution – dismiss all of them!

But my dear friends, this is Kerala and here you can do anything in the name of “worker freedom” and “worker rights” and get away with it. There is no such thing as “worker responsibility” or “worker discipline”. Many of my friends are at managerial positions in Kerala government departments and they tell me that it is impossible to take any disciplinary action against anyone who is remotely affiliated to a trade union.

In a state where even the top politicians have dozens of criminal cases against them (most of them are examples of “indiscipline”) what more can you expect?
