Kerala police - moral police?

One of the news items that caught my attention today was from Deepika newspaper.  This newspaper is junk, but I monitor their online edition to see what they are cooking. Here is the gist of the story that caught my attention,

A group of well educated adults was arrested on immorality charges from a Kollam resort by Kerala Police. Kerala police recovered laptops, mobile phone, foreign liquor and some sexually explicit images from the hotel room.

I was wondering what is wrong in owning laptops, drinking a glass of beer or owning a mobile?  I agree storing sexual images in laptop is illegal, but I can also bet that at least 80% of computers in Kerala contains pornographic images.

Now Deepika publishes another article within an hour providing an analysis of the story. It is infuriating and total nonsense. Here is a snapshot,

news deepika

People arrested on immorality charges claimed that they are friends and they used to party together.

Some of the parents also responded that this is not big deal. They claimed that this is common in the countries they had stayed.

First of all who made police into a moral police?  If a group of adults (whether male or female) assemble at a private party without violating any laws why are these idiots arresting them?

What is so horrible is the fact that newspapers such as Deepika also encourage this sort of police raj. In the above article, they are making fun of the people who got arrested and they portray police as a superhero rescuing us all from the dangerous immoral people.

In developed countries whenever such nonsense is perpetrated by Police, newspapers rightly take the side of poor citizens who are being harassed.  But in Kerala, the newspapers itself encourages such human rights violations. And my dear friends, this is where human rights is important not when you resort to violence and harthal!

It is sad that newspapers who can work as a catalyst for social change is actually writing articles like a third rate gossip magazine.

This has become such a big nonsense that these days I carry a copy of my marriage certificate whenever I travel with my wife. Otherwise some stupid SI in Kerala police will arrest me by saying that I am doing "anaasyasyam" (immoral traffic?) with my wife!

Trivia : The SI who arrested these people who were looking their own business became a hero! Probably he will get a promotion soon! Now do you know what happened to CI sugathan who arrested CPI politician Supal in a serious case of attacking a police station and releasing arrested criminals? Well, he got suspension! :-)

well newspapers these days are just looking for ’sensational’ items.
even if it human rights violation, they will try to sensationalize it to sell their stories.

Police does have a pitiful state in Kerala, when the congress is ruling, the left will blame the police, when the left is ruling the congress will blame the police. And I feel sad for the poor policemen deployed to stop activists at Secretariat they get stoned everyday. Now, imagine a job where u get stoned everyday.
    ouch.

  2. Toms Says:

    Very BAD, Deepika!!!!

  3. jacob Says:

However, to get the clearer pic, you need to read the whole story in kollam nattuvisheshangal.
Read and judge for yourself. I’m surprised why they had to take an apartment. They can very well do these in their own house, since their parents have no problem. :>

  4. Kenney Says:

In a recent vanitha feature about mobile phones, there was a mention by a police officer that storing porn in mobiles is not a crime, but transferring is a crime.

Anyways…. Kerala is the last place where people respect personal freedom !!!!

  5. scorpiogenius Says:

I believe Kerala society is not yet ready to tolerate lifestyles like these..See, this is a kind of a cultural infiltration and I think it wont be tolerated anywhere in India. Now what are they doing in an alien apartment away from home with sexually illicit materials?

The saying is that ‘when you are in Rome, be like the Romans’. They must’ve shown the sense to grasp that such activities wont be tolerated in the state. Respect the locals…thats the first rule.

  6. Pradeep Kumar Says:

It is quite common in all other states and countries that friends are gathering in particular place for their weekend or any discussions or whatever it may be…
What is the problem with the Police or public . Do they creating any problem for the public ? We keralites are more worrying about what others are doing ?

  7. KeralaTips Says:

I am specifically pointing out the nonsense that is cooked up by the so called mainstream media. The article is only going to encourage silly mob behavior and lack of respect for personal freedom.

I don’t want to get into a debate on morality. But I am certain about one thing. There is no “absolute morality”.

  8. KeralaTips Says:

@Kenney, talking about mobiles it seems Vanitha is successful in propogating fear of mobiles as I have written earlier. Now Kerala government is planning to ban it.

  9. Toms Says:

ya Jacob, mebbe the parents can also join and pep up their life with a juicy G* B* and I*, coz baby, this is the in-thing in the US of A!!!!

  10. Aarushi Says:

This moral policing is because most of the people have nothing else to do than to peep into others life, and out of jealousy. Suppose you are sitting in your balcony with a hand on the shoulder on your wife, the neighbour whom you cannot see will be watching you behind his grill with a binocular and he inform police that some unparliamentary is going on next flat. The police immediately come to the house and start questioning you, this is a menace. The neighbour may even go to court and court may say until further orders you cannot sit with your wife.

Recently I and my wife was sitting near Museum and talking under a tree then one person came and told us \”ithivide pattilla\” I asked \”ethu ivide pattilla\” then that person told \”kooduthal parayukayonnum venda enthanennenikku manassilayi\” I asked \” who are you ?\” he said I am a mufti police man then I asked him \”Go get Museum CI here I dont have to argue with a person who is not in uniform\” The person left with a gurr! I didnt even hug or kiss my wife we were telling some jokes in an open place.

When I was studying I had seen Cabarate in Trivandurm Quilon but now can anyone imagine, it was in 80s now things have changed so many busybodies, I think sensational media reports are behind this menace.

It is 1 matter of running a brothel in an appartment and another sitting with your wife. Let everyone know that such things are happening in Kerala. What’s the problem?

  12. KeralaTips Says:

    @raymond,

Just one question. You bring your friend to your home. Now there are 3 people at home. you, your wife and your friend. Suddenly an SI jumps in and arrests your friend with your wife for immoral traffic.

    You got the idea?

  13. raymond Says:

Running brothels, whether basic or hi-fi, has become a business and one of the easiest way of making money in Kerala nowadays. It is an industry. Hence, we have to cope up with police queries. It is up to you to prove that you hve legal relationship. What’s the big deal?

  14. KeralaTips Says:

    @raymond,

So what you are suggesting? That we all carry marriage certificates, certificate saying that the girl i am travelling with is my sister, mother or wife?

    Man, I salute you.

  15. raymond Says:

Carry certificate or not, you may have to prove. Coz the brothel industry has become so rampant that even govt using its machinery cannot reduce this. It’s like the monster that Hercules tried to cut the arms of - the more times the arms are cut, the more times it reproduces. More tough laws and spy networks (not only for this) are needed. The media should also contribute in this. And people have to cope up with this until such social vices are reduced if not eliminated.

  16. raymond Says:

Remember how Santosh Madhavan was exposed? Everybody knew about what he was doing long before he was caught. Even Interpol couldn’t do anything. Then came the media and blew up into a big issue. Now, under what all vices is he know for - fraud, blackmailer, rapist, bf maker etc etc ? So who helped this to be exposed. So, thank the media. Of course media also has limitation, if the influence of a god - person is so entwined in the beuraucracy that they can only be mere spectators. Who knows, one day these hi-fi IT guys may be the future Santosh Madhavan in the making.

  17. Preeben Says:

The police is encouraging all those trafficking of innocent girls and they are onlookers when the minors are forced into prostitution. The freedom for people who are above 21 to do whatever they like in the privacy of the rooms have to be honoured. By catching such guys who are explicit in their actions and deed is no way going to make police heroes. It is regular now for one to read news of girls being abducted, forced into sex racket. It is making headlines and police is not able to arrest those culprits. Let Police apply intelligence if they have any and catch those who trap innocent and make them sex slaves and not the consenting ones. This attitude of Police is making decent couples also to go and take a break from the busy schedules in some resorts.

  18. Preeben Says:

A couple of years back Rahul Gandhi the Congress leader came with his Columbian girl friend and visited all the exotic places in our own God’s own country. Z category Kerala Police all gave enough protection. Rahul Is a bachelor still. Why the double standards men in Khaki?

  19. raymond Says:

If police don\’t do anything, the media can. Three cheers to Deepika.

  20. Jacob Says:

    Vivre Le Media!!!!!

  21. narayan Says:

heard that this is not an uncommon thing in banglore. in fact there are many farm houses on the hosur banglore road where IT professionals meet on the weekends and have orgys and get high by smoking weed

  22. narayan Says:

@ Prebeen - Rahul Gandhi in a recent interview telecast in one of the national channels said he was single and looking for a proper woman who understand his profession and the people around him

so the trip he made to kumarakom with the columbian friend was a kind of “official” *** with SPG protection!!

  23. Jacob Says:

Need more stringent rules against such antisocial behaviours as in Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

  24. Jacob Says:

If Rahul Gandhi does so, what’s the problem. Who cares? But if the whole people of Kerala try to do that, then it becomes a social problem.
