Kerala Tips

Kerala is these days full of hartals, bandhs and other forms of strikes without any particular reason. In fact, most of us don’t even know what a particular hartal or agitation is for! I think one of the primary reasons for this is the “free time” a lot of unemployed in Kerala has. They survive on someone who is working outside kerala like a pig.

I have been staying in Kerala for 35 years and normally news about nonsense don’t surprise me. But last week one news item caught my attention. Some guys have formed an action committee against 4 lane conversion of national highway in Kerala. For a second, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Anyone who has travelled through a 2 lane national highway know how hazardous it is.. But I am sure a lot of idiots would support them in their cause.

Similar is the case with agitations happening in Chalakkudy. I wonder how these guys at chalakkudy get so much free time (BTW, Chalakkudy is also number 1 in alcohol consumption). There is one set of idiots who are working against the Athirappally project, another set is agitating against the construction of flyover at chalakkudy and another set of idiots is organizing harthals etc. against road widening. These groups consist of politicians, fundamentalists and enviornmental terrorists. The agitation behind athirappally project is driven by vested interests. I guess they fear that the money they are fleecing from tourists may stop after athirappilly project becomes operational.

Similarly the people behind trader strike/agitation are rich traders who fear competition. Big gold merchants and other vested interests are fuelling the so called “agitation against monopoly”. The only funny part is that probably the Kerala traders are one of the biggest monopolies in the world . Recently a new retail chain started operations in Trivandrum and I was amazed at the rush. People were ready to wait for hours for the check out from cash counter! Why? they are fed up with the arrogant shop keepers in Trivandrum..

Everyone claims that they are doing hartals, strikes and bandhs for common man. But I wonder who that “common man” is!
