Athirappilly power project - The need of the hour

India is currently experiencing a power production shortage of 7% and during peak times it goes up to 12%. It is expected that power requirements are going to rapidly increase in the coming years.

Kerala is also no exception. Much of Kerala’s power requirement is satisfied by one of the best hydro electric projects in the world. The idukki hydro electric project. Thankfully it was completed before the emergence of fundamentalist enviornmental organizations and crackpot individuals.

In order to meet the future power requirements, sometime ago the silent valley project was proposed. This project if implemented could have generated enough power for years to come. But that was stalled by Indira Gandhi after being brain washed by enviornmentalists. Even the proposal to create a smaller dam to generate 75MW was sabotaged.

Hydro electric projects are one of the cheapest form for generating electric power. It is also the safest method. In addition, there is no pollution and no risk to the surrounding population. It is a god given method for power generation. As the idukki power project shows, implementation of the hydro electric project preserves the enviornment and forest rather than destroy it.

Yet you find idiotic human beings opposing any kind of progress. In Kerala, things are much worse. The silent valley project was sabotaged by saying that lion tailed monkeys will find the dam offensive. Some are also claiming that lion tailed monkeys are their grandparents and we should leave them in peace. In the case of new Athirappilly power project these “enviornmental terrorists” are saying that it will destroy chalakkudy river.

The Athirappilly project is one of the best projects available for future power requirements. It is estimated that it can generate over 150MW of power.

I want Malayalees to learn the lesson the hard way. I want 12hour night power cuts. Soon companies (whatever is remaining for example, IT) will close their offices and move somewhere else. Then we will learn.

Athirapilly power project is a scam and a sham. Those who don’t know details of it should not write too well of the project when everyone except CPI-M and KSEB are protesting against the project. I wouldn’t share much details of the protest but here are a few details a layman could have missed. The damage to species, ecology etc is immense. But that isn’t what i am talking about. The real scenario is that the catchment areas where water should be abundant and is not, the flow of water and amount of water flowing all indicate that the power generated wouldn’t be enough to supply for an hour or half during peak hours of transmission. So, investing around 500-600 crore for the project isn’t viable. I am quoting an engineer who spent 25 years in the Electricity Board. The fact that KSEB top officials and CPI-M bosses are just out for the moolah in the whole deal is an outrageous enough proposition to fuel sentiment against the whole deal. There is nothing positive in the project to be achieved. So be careful as to which side you end up supporting. There are sides to be taken and it is going to be a heavyweight boxing match. I’ve taken my stand. What about you.
