Kerala bans drinking water
September 15th, 2007
Kerala has decided to ban drinking water completely since according to a study, 99% of the water is contaminated. In order to protect its citizens from harm, government decided to completely ban drinking water, citing health reasons.
Ok. Ok. Drinking water is not yet banned. Unlike banning pepsi/coke, banning drinking water may not get clapping from “ordinary man” on the ground. As I have written earlier, any kind of drinking water you get in Kerala is probably 100 times contaminated than the Pepsi/Coke you buy from a shop. Yet, in an idiotic move, Kerala government completely banned coke/pepsi. Thanks to the courts, it is still available in the market. The study says,
Results are startling since up to 1,500 times of the standard level of bacteria have been detected. According to WHO stipulations, drinking water should be free of any form of coliform bacteria.
In all, 99 per cent of the piped water supply contained the rod-shaped gram-negative bacteria while it was present in 93 per cent rivers and well water. Samples were collected over the past month from the Neyyar river in the south to Iritty in the northern Kannur district.
