Nursing phenomenon in Kerala
September 8th, 2007
If you visit places in central Kerala (Idukki for example), you will find an interesting social phenomenon. A lot of young students are studying nursing in Kerala or outside kerala. In fact, it is very difficult to get train tickets on sleeper compartments which goes to bangalore or mumbai. Trains are swarmed by nursing students whenever there is a long weekend.
Malayalees know how to survive in a state which has no job opportunities or industries. Nursing offers lot of job opportunities outside india and even guys are joining these courses dreaming of a better life ahead. Many families are now enjoying financial freedom, thanks to a relative who is working as a nurse in UK or US. Some of the remote bank branches are seeing 1000% increase in their deposit rates, thanks to these hard working fellows.
There is another interesting social aspect of this nursing craze. I recently visited a remote village in Kerala, where over 50 youngsters are studying nursing in Bangalore. Since these guys ARE THE next generation, the entire village culture is getting changed. For good or bad, bangalore is here!

Nursing is the poor cousin of IT. But unlike IT, within India, Nursing doesnt pay well. However in countries like UK, USA and the GULF, Nurses are in hude demand and also payed well. I even heard from a friend that in one of the Hospitals in Manchester, UK, there is even an asscoiation of Nurses hailing from kottayam district!

I think it is a very healthy trend. In fact, Malayalee nurses outside Kerala, have helped a lot to boost the image of Malayalees. Nursing may not pay well; not all jobs pay well. Payment has nothing to do with the intrinsic value of a profession. Hats off to the nurses, who do a thankless job. May be they aren’t paid well, but they get the blessings of the patients who are well looked after by them.

One cannot even imagine the number of nurses that relocated to the US within the last couple of years. There is atleast 1 nurse in every malayalee family living in America. This is indeed changing the culture of kerala, people in kerala has so much money and I hope the the change is a positive one.
and to comment on..
“Malayalee nurses outside Kerala, have helped a lot to boost the image of Malayalees”
just as much some have helped boost our image..some are destroying it! There are hospital that do not want malayalee nurses because of all the petty fight they have causing and showing their true malayalee character inside the hospital. they don’t realize they are destroying the chance for future nurses.

actually nursing needs much thinking as a subject.here comes a problem.with the weight of father’s pockets and rubber estates, all “pottans”are now getting admission to nursing.this indeed wil make harm to kerala nursing sector.you can easily understand this by comparing goyt.students and pvt students.the standerd of govt students is extremely high………………..

With sooo many students wanting to study nursing from kerala, we are still not allowing enough collges to be started. All our students go outside the state and spend a lot of money there… Why are our stupid politicians not trying to change this ? Are they getting money form the educatoin looby outside ?

Its true that there are thousands of students doing nursing outside kerala, especially in Karnataka, as there are so many nursing colleges/schools. But institutions that are providing quality education are very less.
Actually lot of money is flowing outside from kerala for educational purposes. We could have blocked this money is we have enough colleges in kerala itself.
We should have lots of Nursing and engineering colleges in kerala. They should provide quality education as well. Students who are studying in Kerala definetly laging in english communication. This situation should change….
