The following photo is taken at fuel station in Vellayambalam, Trivandrum owned by Kerala’s civil supplies department. The red board is a bit difficult to read, since I had to take the photo very discretely. You see, I don’t want to get beaten up!

The board says - “FREE AIR - It is illegal to pay or accept money for free air. It is also banned to sell any metal cups or wheel caps here - signed manager”.

But if you stay there for 2 minutes, you can see people openly charged for the so called “free air” - Rs.5 for car and Rs.3 for bikes. Now that is the least of the problems. The guy who gives out “free air” will try to sell you a lot things such as “fancy wheel cups” and “metal cap for the wheel” etc.

Now here is the tricky part. If you don’t check your tyres, he may not put back the metal cap unscrewed for filling air. Next time when you go there for filling air, he will say, “hey, a metal cap is missing!”. Then you will pay the guy Rs.10 for another metal cap and the cycle continues.

A successful mallu will always find ways to cheat people.
