Traders starts agitation against consumer choice

Today trader meetings were organized all over Kerala, calling for the closure of supermarkets and other big retailers. Clearly, it is a direct challenge against consumer choice in Kerala. Nobody is saying the “Vyapari Vyavasayi groups” cannot start a supermarket. Who is preventing them to compete with retail giants?

Unfortunately, none of the consumer bodies have come against the tyranny of the traders. Traders are using the money and the power they wield to spread lies. They are saying that big companies are going to exploit poor.

I will give some examples of what currently these “holy” traders are doing.

1. Recently I talked to a girl working as a salesgirl in a traditional shop. She is paid Rs. 600 per month (that is $15 for all you NRIs) and has to work for seven days a week from morning 8 to evening 10. Remember, this shop is owned by a trader association member.

2. The attitude of these traders are irritating to say the least. The consumer is the DOG for these guys. Their attitude is like “buy the shit if you want”. Visit Trivandrum if you want a taste of their attitude.

3. There is no choice for the consumer. You will not get what you want. But rather you will get what the trader wants to sell. That means he will sell the item which has the maximum margin and normally it turns out to be the worst. As I have pointed it out earlier, you cannot buy “fruti” but can get “maaza” easily!

I urge consumer bodies to loose their lethargy and act now. It may be too late if you don’t respond now.
