What is the meaning of law?

In Kerala, “Law” is redefined from June 1st, 2007 as the following.

“Law” is a set of rules applicable only for the rich people. For poor/middle class people, law doesn’t apply. For example, suppose you want to encroach government land or government property. The first thing you need to make sure is that you are a poor/middle class fellow.

I guess we can extend this to other areas as well.

Guy1 : I am going to kill that fellow and rape his daughter.
Guy2: Are you crazy?

Guy1 : I don’t need to worry, I am not that rich. Law anyway applies only to rich people.

The term *poor*, which you have used so carelessly here, encompass a whole spectrum of human population. Somewhere in there are the most unfortunate of classes (to use a Marxian term), the tribals. I call them “unfortunate” not because they hold a certain world view, but because we, with our assumed air of sophistication condemn those world views. Some sectors of land in the areas that are being evacuated now are also populated by the “Adivasis”, as we so affectionately call them. They, being the original dwellers of those lands, do not hold any official records of ownership. It is to protect them and keep them out of the current debate that the government is compelled to redefine the “Law” (as you put it). This might be paving the way for some exploitation under the false label of being poor. But that has to be dealt with separately.

Hope we would see a little more sensitivity from your side the next time you jot down human affairs of such kind.

Anand, I do agree with some of the points, expecially the plight of adivasis.

But what I am pointing out is the double standards taken by the ruling party.

If you check out any busy junction, you will see that lot of shops are built there flouting all the rules. Now I don’t understand why these must be spared when the resorts owned by “rich” must be razed to ground? Indirectly government is propagating hatred against people who are financially well. It is as if having some money with you is “Sin”.

    Consider this,

Hey, I kicked that fellow yesterday. He was refusing to pay me Rs.10,000 as unloading fees. Thank god, I am poor and he is rich.

This kind of mentality already exists. Now government is also participating in such kind of behavior. Don’t mistake me for a capitalist, but this kind of radical socialism can only exist in utopia.

But I have a suspicion that like many in Kerala, you want to keep the “poor” as “poor” for a long long time!

Interestingly what you talk about is quite different from what many other people who opposes the eviction move. Whenever I swtich on TV I see them accuse that the government is favoring the rich by evicting only the small time business people and not the rich. Interesting.

Do you want people who have nowhere to be go, and people who have setup huge malls to be dealt with at the same level.. u have to be considerate.. and thats exactly what VS is doing.. the rich think only about the rich.. so do you.. and thus, u probably dont want to care about the poor.. which the goivernment has to..

Have you ever tried to park a vehicle in M.G Road before? The shop owners think they own the whole road. You park somewhere ON THE ROAD, and immediately some watchamn comes from the nearby shop and says you cant park there since its for their customers only.. Have you experienced the traffic congestion that occurs in this area during the peak hours?

What right does any one have to encroach land? And can you tell me of a place ( an actual physical place ) where the ‘poor’ shops are allowed to continue encroaching the road, while the ‘rich’ ones are razed?

Stop making asumptions without solid facts.

  7. Kerala Tips Says:

who is making what assumption? What I am saying is that EVERYONE must be evicted if he has broken LAW of this land. And before that all the government employees who had made all these fake pattayams and other documents must be punished.
