The mosquito terminator from Kerala
April 30th, 2007
E.M. George was an ace ISRO scientist in Trivandrum. But then he found an area which required his urgent attention - mosquito control! He quit his job to become the “mosquito terminator”!
After years of study, he has developed something called “GEM Technology” which is a method for fighting mosquitos. I think the term “GEM Methodology” is more appropriate.
GEM technology is a process of achieving sustainable mosquito control in an eco friendly manner by providing artificial breeding grounds utilizing common household utensils and destroying larvae by non-hazardous natural means such as throwing them in dry places or feeding them to larvae eating fishes Gambussia Affinis, Ebites Reticulatus etc. or suffocating them by spreading a thin plastic sheet over the entire water surface to isolate atmospheric air. Shifting the water with larvae to another vessel and pouring a few drops of kerosene oil or insecticide/ larvicide in it is another option for killing wrigglers, but not preferred due to its environmental impact. Most of the ornamental fishes eat mosquito larvae. This method being Gentle, Genetic, God given, Efficient, Economic, Eco friendly, Modern, Mighty & Magnificent is christened GEM technology.
Traditional method of ensuring that there is no waterlogging around your house doesn’t work simply because not everyone follows it in Kerala! Instead GEM methodology wants you to provide stagnant water so that mosquitos are tricked into laying eggs on it and then you can destroy them!
I guess mosquito repellent companies may not be happy with this guy!

Dunno if Mr George knew a simpler method - just squat the mosquito when it bites you - dont need to be a rocket scientist for that.

I’m going to try the plastic sheeting method to kill mosquito larvae. I wasted $400 on a mosquito terminator MT2000 + $200 on a large CO2 tank. The thing never worked. Supposedly, one can regulate the flow of CO2 with a timer, but there were no directions describing how to hook up the timer to CO2 tank. It appeared that all the timer did was turn on a tiny bulb (which was suppose to “mimic” a hot body. Customer support was non-existent. My elderly in-laws continually beg me to get the thing working, but in my opinion, in was a scam.

Hi Mr Unni, Thank u very much 4 ur comment on. I had written earlier on this solution elsewhere. Ur solution has good as well as VERY BAD aspects.
Good aspects:
* It is the oldest mosquito control method. Mankind has used it for milleniums. Our predecessors had very few other techniques 4 mosquito control.
* It was in use till mid 20th century.
* Its a very versatile method- almost AN APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY. It does not require any investment or training. It can be used anywhere & everywhere, by rich & poor, literate & illiterate, young & old, men & women, deaf & dump, blind & others, day & night, and what not?!!!!!
Bad effect
* Thereis no guarantee that one will be successful in the effort.
* B4 we kill it, she would have already disturbed our comfort.
* As in the case of other blood-sucking creatures, she injects her saliva CONTAINING DANGEROUS PATHOGENS into our blood stream, and thats it! Whether we kill her or not, WE ARE INFECTED & SHE HAS SUCCESSFULLY ACCOMPLISHED HER MISSION. THEN WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE WHETHER SHE IS KILLED OR NOT???
* U R verymuch right that a rocket scientist is not required to know all this. I came to know all these from other books.

HiAlice,
Hope u have tried the appropriate technology for mosquito control. If u have tried, by this time u wold have seen some positive result. y don’t u share it with others, here.

Hi everybody,
I am having some graphs of #of malaria cases of Keralam & some other states from 1961 to 1996. If someone is interested to view it please tell how to include it here. An attempt to paste it here faild.
