Elephants, torture, religious festivals and death
April 9th, 2007
Nowadays almost on a daily basis, you can see newspaper reports of elephants going mad and killing its mahout. Some think that this happens because elephant is an aggressive animal. The truth is just opposite. Elephant is one of the most peaceful animals you can find. Then why all these tragedies?
The tragedy is that elephants endure untold torture and hardship. Many mahouts (aana pappan) are drunkards and physically abuse elephants all the time. Also elephants are made to stand in a very noisy enviornment for long periods during religious festivals. What is amazing is the low level of human deaths in all these!
Real voice calls for a ban on elephant slavery. It is also has the graphic footage of the recent tragedy.
Elephants shouldn’t be made slaves, chained and paraded in religious festivals. Yesterday, during a muslim festivity in Kerala, a tusker went wild – killing the mahout and injuring another elephant.
