Lorry strike in Kerala - why immediate government action is needed
April 3rd, 2007
It is already 3 days since lorry strike started in Kerala, paralysing goods traffic including essential commodities. The strike called by the lorry owners is a direct challenge to the rule of law in the state. They were given plenty of time to install speed governors. But after all the talks, the owners were adamant in going forward with the strike.
Whenever goverment issues a permit to a lorry or an auto, it is an agreement between the owner and the government. When you get the permit, you basically agree to the rules set by government. From the way lorry owners are behaving it appears that they were doing a favor to malayalees all these years!
In many places fuel is running out. Already prices of many items such as vegetables are on the increase. There is no impact on the rich, yet again it is the poor who suffers.
There is a problem with the price rise. Once gone up, prices rarely come down. Government needs to act quick. They can start by auctioning the lorries.
