Communal violence on the increase in Kerala

Traditionally Kerala has been a rather peaceful state. There has been some instances of political violence and goonda activities, but overall compared to many other states in India, Kerala is peaceful. You could go around without being killed by a mob.

But things are slowly changing. If incidents in north kerala are of any indication, widespread violence and communal problems are possible in near future. Indications are that there are groups of people who are pumping lot of money to flame communal tensions. The sad thing is that these groups are getting a hold in northern areas.

Many militant groups have openly allied with major political Fronts in recent years, thus stymieing a concrete response to their illegal activities. In recent years, Federal agencies had unearthed Kerala-based money-laundering rackets facilitating the passage of funds from West Asia-based groups to the rest of the country through expatriate networks.

While bomb-hauls, seditious graffiti and the murder of moderates have become common occurrences, the day may not be far when such sporadic eruptions coalesce into a major terrorist event, says A Vinod Kumar, Associate Fellow at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi.

In the latest incident, a group of thugs attacked a police station in kottakkal. What is alarming is the fact that the gang contained over 40 criminals and came in 20+ vehicles. They came to free a murder suspect from police custody! There was a lot of damage at the police station and the vehicles that were parked there were destroyed.

So far police acted swifty and arrested over 20 people. Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishan said in assembly that these incidents will be dealt with iron hand. I hope he keeps his word.

My opinion is that things like these must be handled red hot iron hand. The game of generating communal tensions is very dangerous. Once there is a breach of trust between the communities, everything goes downhill and there is no way to patch things up. Eventually this will make Kerala a living hell.

On the law front, I think we need to increase the punishment for gang violence. Also cases of this nature should be disposed quickly by courts and there should never be any bail for people arrested for mob violence.
