It seems that some youngsters without jobs in Trivandrum decided to go for self employment. Here is a short summary of their modus operandi.

1. Get an old bike on dirt cheap prices. Then change or hide the registration number plate.

2. Get another youngester without job as an accomplice. Only qualification is that the fellow has some stamina and should be ready to sell his soul to devil.

3. Hide near a narrow lane (which is not crowded) with the bike. When a woman walks through the lane quickly pounce on her and get the gold chain. Since there are two fellows, woman is helpless.

4. Sell the gold chain and make huge profit!

What I have written above is not a joke. In the last week alone over 10 such incidents happened in Trivandrum. Also the fellows on the bike are now carrying weapons. They do whatever to get the gold chain.

For Malayali women, walking without gold chain is worse than walking nude. Hence even there is a threat to life, women are ready to walk around with gold chain. For some, it is a matter of belief, they want the marriage chain always with them.

The chain-snatchings were reported mostly from Vattiyoorkavu area. The gang used motorbikes stolen from other districts for their operations in the city. The vehicles were fitted with fake registration plates to throw police off-track. The gang targeted women returning from work, morning-walkers or those visiting temples in the early hours.
