Churidars banned in Kerala? Relax guys, it is a hoax!
March 9th, 2007
Yesterday Jo reported a rumour that police in central Kerala are harassing women who wear churidars.
A colleague, whose hometown is Muvattupuzha, reported that policewomen are out on the roads in Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam and Perumbavoor (in Ernakulam district, Kerala state) to find females who wear churidars with a slit on the sides. Whenever they find someone like that, they staple the slits and fine them with Rs. 500
Well, the whole thing has turned out to be just a rumour. It was prominently explained in today’s Mathrubhoomi newspaper (print and online, both in Malayalam). There was no such police action! According to MB, this rumour was very strong in central Kerala, even to the point that women were afraid to wear churidars! Now the police is getting harassed by feminists and women activists who flock to police stations near Muvattupuzha
Now the question is why we tend to believe these? Simple – Kerala police is notorious (in fact Indian police) for its moral policing.

Agree Jo, In fact the rumour was very strong. Some of my friends reported the same. I guess that is why it made to Mathrubhoomi!
