Land mafia in Kerala – How to loose your property

Kerala landDo you own a piece of land in Kerala, but working or studying abroad? Then be careful! By the time you are back, you may find that somebody else is the owner of your land!

The land mafia presence is very strong in Kerala. They target properties which are owned by NRIs or people staying away from the land. Since some village officers and tahsildars etc. are part of this mafia, selling your land is not a problem at all! So when you visit next time, you will see that somebody else is constructing a house or a compound wall on the land!

Here are a few tips to avoid loosing your land (Kerala is now progressing towards Goonda Raj like in Bihar),

1. Ensure that someone you can trust visit your property regularly. Don’t leave your land like a “purampokku”. It is an invitation to mafia!

2. As far as possible, buy property near your home or near your relatives.

3. Construct wall as soon as you buy your property. Else you may find a footpath overnight.

4. Pay your land tax at the local village office regularly. So if someone sells your land(!) you will come to know of it immediately. But this is not foolproof since some village officers are also part of this gang.

Kerala has lost all its charm. Land prices even in far flung areas are higher than that of New York. No good roads, no drainage, no system for waste dispoal, no work, no good food, no veggies, practically nothing in Kerala. Kerala is really screwed up and this bubble will soon burst. Its better not to invest anything in Kerala.
