Who is the best actor? (Mammooty Vs Mohan Lal)
Friends, this is just an open discussion and anyone can express their own views. Who is the best actor in Malayalam? Mammootty or Mohan Lal? Let us have some analysis.
Mohanlal is a high talented versatile energetic actor. He can do any role with ease. He has got great supporters and fans in Kerala. Without any doubt, we can say Mohanlal is one of the top actors in Malayalam cinema today. What are all his capacities? He can do any role effortlessly. He is very good in Comedy (Nadodikaattu, Pattana Pravesham, San manassullavarkku samaadanam, Vellanakalude Nadu, Yodha, Kilukkam, Chitram-Which is not a comedy movie but a classic, Boeing Boeing, Then Mavin Kombathu, Thalavattam). Most of his comedy movies are classics as well. He is very good in action movies also (Rajavinte Makan, Manthrikam, Spadikam, Keerthi Chakra). He has got some classics such as Chitram, Devasuram, Aaram Thampuran, His Highness Abdullah, Bharatham, Kireedam, Udayananu Tharam, Vanaprastham, Iruvar).
He has got a very flexible body language which is his plus point. He is so natural in his roles. So what are all his strengths?
1. Very good in comedy and very good in timing.
2. Very good combination with Jagathy and Sreenivasan
3. Good in dancing compared to other super stars of kerala
4. Effortless acting
5. You can feel the power of his acting as Feudal king in Devasuram and Aaram Thamburan kind of movies
6. Heart touching style in family movies.
Mohanlal is not so handsome and does not have the looks of a chocolate actor as in the bollywood movies. But he won the hearts of keralites only because of his talents.
Now about Mammootty! Who is mammooty for malayalis? Many are having the opinion that Mammootty is not a born actor. He developed his own style of acting.
He also faces many criticisms
1. Not good in dancing
2. Not good in fighting as compared to Mohan Lal
3. Not good in comedy
I was not a keen observer of Mammootty in the past. But recently I started analyzing his talents; How can an actor shine as a superstar for 25 years if he is not good in all these essential things mentioned above. So definitely he must have some capabilities which others do not have.

Comedy - Of course Mohan Lal. Mammootty score negative marks in Comedy.
Fighting - Of course Mohan Lal. In some movies Mammootty also did good fighting scenes. But still Mohan Lal is good.
Running - Moahnlal (His running style in Chitram, Vandanam etc are examples)
Romance – Mohanlal (100’s of movies)
Classic songs - Mohanlal (His Highness Abdulla, Bharatham etc, Mammooty – Rakkuyilin Raga Sadassu)

Again, Both Mammootty and Mohanlal are versatile actors. Actually there is no point in comparing them. Both of them have already proved that they are the best.
One thing that sets Mammootty apart from his contemporaries is the fact that from the beginning itself, he has been able to treat both art-house cinema and commercial potboilers with ease. He made his mark during the early period of his career itself by enacting roles in films of stalwarts like M. T. Vasudevan Nair, K.G. George, Padmarajan, P.N. Menon, and Bharathan. Later on his talent was utilised by internationally renowned directors like Adoor Gopalakrishnan, T. V. Chandran, and Pavithran. He was a regular in movies of Harikumar, Mohan, etc. The movies by M.T. Vasudevan Nair and Padmarajan, arguably among the best of Malayalam writer-directors, widened Mammootty’s acting horizon. It may be mentioned that two of M.T. Vasudevan’s movies which bear his autobiographical elements were enacted by Mammootty - Aksharangal (I.V. Sasi) and Sukrutham (Harikumar).
Mohanlal may have flexibility in dancing, running and in Summer Salting scenes. But the real flexibility according to Lohithadas is the ability to change from one character to another. And for him Mammotty is the most flexible actor in the industry. I.e. From a fisher man to district collector, from a police officer to a Pandi Murukan, From an advocate to a person who searches for shit (In Ponthanmada), From a Glamorous Photographer (Aparichithan) to a Mentally retarded person (Soorya Manasam). He is the real actor. He is the star.
Though he has been criticized as unable to portray comic roles, his latest movies Rajamanikyam, Thommanum Makkalum, and Thuruppugulan gave a fitting reply to critics. Mammootty, though a hugely popular star, is an exception in Indian films where dancing skills have to be a necessary part of an actor’s repertoire. But the emotion and the depth that he lends to his characters makes him a well revered actor and makes up for his shortcomings.
Mammootty is the only second star after Prem Nazir to complete 300 films as the hero in Malayalam. Mammootty reached this feat as he completed his latest film with Renjith titled Kaiyoppu. Mammootty also holds the rare distinction of appearing as hero in an astonishing 35 movies released in a single year, 1986, a feat exceeded only by Prem Nazir who acted in 39 movies as hero released during 1979. “Mathilukal has been shown in almost 40 international film festivals beginning with Venice. Among my films, it is Mathilukal which has invited the maximum number of international honours. The sincere co-operation by Mammootty, the actor has played a major role in the success of the movie” - Adoor Gopalakrishnan.
I am living with a people of mixed nationalities. Especially among north Indians. For them all our starts are useless (In terms of physical appearance). Here Mammooty and Suresh Gopi are exceptional cases. Acting wise Mohanlal is a Genius, Look wise Suresh Gopi can compete anyone from other movie industries. BUT LOOKWISE, SOUNDWISE, ACTING WISE …NO DOUBT MAMMOOTTY IS THE BEST AMONG ALL THE STARS. HE IS AN ASSET TO ALL KERALITES. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF HIM.

Mammootty is a great actor. As you have rightly said there is no point in comparing the two. But as a keen observer of the two I disagree with many of your observations. Mohanlal is much better at crying scenes. In fact he does not have to strain like Mammootty to express sadness whereas except a few films we can spot some artficiality in Mammootty’s emotional expressions especially sadness. Same is the case with most other parameters. In fact, Lal is considered to be one the best four Malyalam actors the other three being Nedumudi, Thilakan and Bharat Gopi. Looks wise Mammootty is a bit chocolate with a touch of macho malayali. But he looks very banal and lacks the enigma surrounding Lal’s face. Let me conclude by saying that when Mammootty cries audience would say how great an actor he is; when Lal cries audience will share the grief.

Mammoty is a great actor in many ways, in many aspects..But more than that he is a conserved actor in many ways.But when it matters lal is a born gifted actor..He can do any roles as everybody knows.Bodylanguage is a much important fact in acting and only lal is having the supremacy in it among malayalam film actors..and no one can argue that. My friend listed above that MUNDU IS MORE SUITABLE FOR MAMMOOTY THAN MOHANLAL.U are the only malayalee who said this and no one has ever told and will tell this. Because it is much more suitable for MOHANLAL.For instance look in aaraamthampuran,Sphadikam,Devasuram.AND also it looks very ugly when mammooty ride the bike…Look in Thaskaraveeran,he is riding bike with NayanTaara.No vulgar scene than this.BUt watch Mohanlal riding enfield in Pingami,Araamthampuran,Sphadikam.And also no way u can compare mammoty with mohanlal in the movies Sphadikam,Aramthampuran,Kireedam,Vandhanam,Chitram,Devasuram,Kilukkam,No 20 Madras mail.WE cant even imagine him doing those roles.But we can assume or imagine mohanlal in mammoty’s roles and he can do that..for example as valyettan roles in valsalyam,valyettan.Lal can also do that marvellously and he has already done that in pavithram. Can mammooty do like lal did in Kamaladalam, Vaanaprastham, Bharatham, HIs Highness Abdulla, Kilukkam, Thacholi VargheseChekavar, Yodha, Rajashilpi….lots and lots..ENKIL MAMMOOTY VADI PIDIKKUM!

Mammooty and Mohanlal completes full circle of acting.Both are great.But when compared with each other as an actor Mohanlal scores.When compared, Mohanlal is far behind of Mammoty’s oru vadakkan veera gadha and roles that should have some Captivating face like (hitler,CBI series).But in all other areas Mohanlal scores over Mammooty.After seeing a mamooty movie we say mammooty a great actor..but after a mohanlal movie only that character will be there in our mind..we even forget about mohanlal,thats why we say mohanlal is a genieus…

mohanlal not an actor just a kuttakali. some kuttakali accidently clicks. but defenitly keralites will ferget all his movees by his end. but mammootties movees will be ever remembered after him. it is just like satyan and prem nazeer. still we r behind the movee of satyan but we forget the movees of prem nazeer. mammootty is a goid gifted acter n his recognisation is the recognisastion of his work. he has never acted a film or produced a film for awards but in the other hand what mohanlal does going behind awards. he rpoduces film by him self for awards.

Hi,
I was a good fan of lal. But now my view is…
Mohan lal:
1. He has performed really well in normal/casual roles and comedy.
2. Character/Role selection is not good. He do not go for selecting different characters which last for long.
3. His body is becoming a drawback for many characters recently.
Mammooty:
1. Very good in character selection. He go for difference in each movie.
2. Still handsome and maintin body to suit all characters.
2. He was a failure in comedy but now it has improved much much more.
3. Still fails in Dance and comedy with body language.
And overall Mohanlal is looking over matured(Now he is not able to do good in comedy/casual roles than the one he did before) in some of his recent characters. and his graph is going down now a days by not selecting good valuable characters.
Mammooty was doing a good selection of characters with difference. and he is improving much in comedy too. His graph is going up..

according to me mohanlal is the best actor.He came as a villian in manjil virinja pookal(1980) at the age of 20.now if u see lal has changed to a hero.he was not good in his appearance when he acted in the first film.it was his talent that made made him popular and favourite actor of kerala.when u compare mammoty he was glamorous and i think it was that glamour which helped him to act and he started his career as the hero of the film.i agree that mammoty suits some characters like police,collector,lawyer but you know lalettan’s face childish.so to conclude with…. bolo lalettan ki… jai…

Mohanlal,our lalettan is the best actor i have seen in indian cinema.Mammootty is an artificial actor..But mohanlal is a natural actor.For amithabh bachan, he is the finest actor in the country. for rgv, he is the robert de niro of indian screen. for time magazine, he is india’s answer to marlon brando. for kamal haasan, he is the most flexible actor in india. for shaji n karun, he is the most immensely talented actor. for priyadarshan, he is the best actor india has ever produced. manirathnam and dr.rajkumar are two frontline fans of this great actor. according to cnn-ibn, he is the most popular keralite of the century. for all of us, he is our “lalettan”.so i feel mahanlal stands one step ahead of mammootty

There is no point in discussing such a topic because everyone knows Mohanlal is the best. then about Mammooty’s comedy in Rajamanickam…he did well because of the dialogues prepared by Suraj Venjaramoodu. It cannot be called as a comedy movie. It has only dialogue variety…
Even bollywod actors refer Lal movies to learn and enhance their skills. This was noted by Shobhana(actress). RamGopal varma, Maniratnam etc regard Mohanlal as the best. Even foreign legends say that ‘if Lal was born in America he would have conquered Hollywood’. I’m not telling Mammooty is a bad actor. He is a good actor, as we all know. But when we compare both, Mohanlal is highly skilled than Mammooty….

I would stay that Mohanlal is the best actor ever in malayalam film industry. Mammootty,damn,has become a grand father and will die in 5 years time. So,there’s no use of talking about him. Whenever I watch movies acted by mamootty,i used to sleep. How do people like such a stinky actor. Phew!. Mohanlal can do any kind of role,but mamootty cant. He’s Gud for nothing. Mohanlal is the best.
