The curse of the animal lovers - why humans are second only to dogs

NDTV reports on the dog problem in Trivandrum,

In response to the increase in cases of stray dog bites in Thiruvananthapuram, the city corporation has started a campaign to curb the population of stray dogs.

“At Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital, 100-150 people approach the hospital with dog bites for anti-rabies treatment.”

“The hospital spends Rs 71,000 a day for the anti-rabies treatment and nearly Rs 2.5 crores are spent in a single government hospital annually,” said Dr L Ravikumar, Senior veterinary surgeon.

Now you would think that this is strong enough reason to take some concrete steps to tackle the stray dog problem. But apparently some think that dogs should be protected at any cost even if it means some us dying due to rabies!

But animal lovers argue that while they understand the government’s compulsion, they don’t agree with the methods adopted to deal with the problem.

“Everything deserves respect. Is that not what your great leader said, the greatness of a nation is judged by the way it treats its animals,” said Avis Lyons, Animal Rescue, Kerala.

This is the curse of Kerala. For anything and everything you can get someone to support you!

I have one intersting incident to mention here:

Some years back, when Smt.Chandra was mayor of Trivandrum, we had this dog menace in Trivandrum. No action was taken by the Mayor, despite so many complaints. Finally one day what happened was the worshipful Mayor’s husband decided to take a morning walk in Perurakada (Trivandrum), where they lived. He was bitten by a dog. The Mayor reacted and immediately the dog catcher squad was released to the city!!
