Trivandrum to Nedumkandam
January 22nd, 2007
I went on a drive to nedumkandam (Idukki district) from trivandrum last week. I have taken the route via NH 47 since M.C. road now is in a pathetic condition. The route taken was,
Trivandrum => Kayamkulam => Harippad => Edathuva =>Thiruvalla => Kottayam => Thodupuzha => Cheruthoni => Kattappana => Nedumkandam.
Here is a summary of that trip,
Trivandrum to Nedumkandam : 350 Kilometres (around 60KM of which is rubberized and around 10KM of which is through dense forrest)
No of hairpin curves : Around 40 (good exercise when you don’t have power steering)
No of Dams seen : 3 (Idukki, cheruthoni and kulamavu dams)
No of halts : 3 (First at Kayamkulam KTDC Aaram Motel and then at Thodupuzha beer parlour and finally at Idukki dam for karikku[tender coconut])
Total Petrol burnt : 20 litres (Rs. 1000)
Time taken for one way trip : 12 hours!
Interesting things seen : Red ‘keeri’, exotic parrots and wild hen (We were not lucky enough to spot a wild elephant)
Best strech of road : Ettumaanoor to Pala (Benz can go at 200KM/hr on this road!)
Landscape you will remember : Paddy fields at Edathuva road
Probability of an accident : High
Temparature gradient : 35 degrees at Trivandrum and less than 20 degrees at cheruthoni (Idukki)
Thrill of driving 350KM through Kerala roads : Priceless

Very good description. The MC Road besides its twists and turns is more dangerous because of the KSRTC buses who virtually make the road their own property.
Thoroughly enjoy the little nuggets of info you post.
Keep it up
