Saddam and Kerala - What is the connection?
January 7th, 2007
When Saddam was executed, Kerala came to standstill for half a day. It was no secret that majority of people in Kerala was shocked at the news. Local TV channels decided to raise the pitch by their provocative news reporting. But to many from outside, who are not used to Kerala politics, it was all puzzling.
Deepan Banati in his lal salaam to saddam post says,
Everyone is so into politics, like our resort manager was reeling demographic facts about his constituency of the number of voters who is of what caste and religion. So the staff comes up to us one day and says they are running to the market as a strike has been declared. The strike has been declared in protest of Saddam Hussein being hanged and it is an all-party strike. Ofcourse, the timing was very convenient as it was just before the New Year weekend. So the entire area goes on strike and there goes my vacation as I have to clue into the news and watch endless repetitions of the noose being tied around Saddam’s neck and the local Malayalam news channel calling Saddam’s death as his martyrdom…
Meanwhile Suresh has some questions about the hanging (but he decides to borrow words from diggers!),
I don’t really support the killing of another person, even if he has caused many deaths. I would personally sentence him to life, and not give him any sorts of luxuries like he got when we were holding him.
